Theology of the Soul

In this treatise on the human soul I will try to explain the fundamental teaching on this subject in simple words so all may come to understand its depth and importance to all people. Since I am a theologian I will approach this subject from a theological view point. The best way to get started is by going over the process of creation, the beginning the creation of the first man by God.

The teaching on the creation of man is found in the book of Genesis that explains God creating Adam, the first human. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Gen.2:7 KJV

It important to take note here the two vital elements involved in the creation of man 1.) Dust of the earth and 2.) God divine life giving Spirit that animates and brings to life everything it touches.  Once God Spirit entered into the physical form that God molded out of the ground it began to breathe and the form became a living body; and at that moment an immortal “conscious soul “(the human mind) became part of that body. It began to perceive things through its five senses, he became aware of his existence through his ability to reason and finally concluded “I Am” therefore “I live” and “I exists.”

Image and Likeness of God:

The Holy Scriptures teach us that the creation of man was a unique creation that made man very special And God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…” Gen. 1:26 As human, every time we do a good deed or show our love for life and others we are reflecting the image of God. The likeness of God is what gives us our ability of creative thought, imagination; our power of reasoning that makes up our thinking process and God gave us the right of freedom of choice, to exercise that right to choose right or wrong, good or evil, God or Satan.

We possess a soul of reasoning, thinking, with the gift of free choice, and its ability to record everything, every experience, emotion, education, and skills from the day of our birth until the day of our death; and through this we become aware of the beauty and wickedness of the world around us. We are given the ability to understand, to show mercy and compassion, to love, and to forgive which is all part of the reflection of the image of God within us.

Human Foundation:

The human body as we know it is made up of three vital elements for human existence, 1.) The physical body gives us shape and form, 2.) The spiritual essence or life force that animate raw material into living substance, and 3.) The conscious soul or human mind, that helps us become aware of our existence through our intellectual mind of reasoning. Each of these elements are interlocked with each other and are interdependent upon each other for good health and to prospers and have an abundant life.

The spiritual essence of life is the foundation of human existence, for without it we would not be alive to debate this issue. The spiritual life force is very connected to our conscious soul and relies on it for strength and it's state of existence. The soul conceives thoughts and these thoughts affect our spiritual nature.

Example:  we know that sin stains the soul and weakens our spiritual nature, which in turn weaken our physical body and we have the onset of illness. When we become aware of our sins and confess them to our priest, who then forgives us and gives us penance to recite as an act of repentance, our soul becomes clean, upright before God and it gives strength to our spiritual nature and we return to good health.

Now many people may think, that I don’t know what I’m talking about, but the facts remain that the truth I am telling you is real and both psychologist and psychiatrist understand this and use this knowledge in their practice to help people with their emotional and psychological problems. The only different is that they have taken God and religion out of the equation and call it science and have changed the terminology.

We know that stress brings on various health conditions and problems, which can turn into primary and secondary illnesses, but stress is only a mental thought pattern that is positive or negative in nature. When we close our eyes and cut our self off from our five senses we would not have any kind of stress, no worries, concerns or fears because we are not aware of what is going on in the world around us. But the moment we conceive a thought pattern or impulse of something we don’t understand we become afraid and we develop stress which in turn affects our physical body and the state of our health.

Example: The human being is like a light bulb, the raw physical material is the body, the electricity is the spiritual life force and when the two come together the result is the creation of light, which is man’s conscious soul.

Holy Scriptures teaches: the Soul Immortality

*The soul and spirit are to different and separate elements “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edge sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow…” Hebrew 4:12 NIV Paul talks about soul and spirit as two separate elements.

*In the state of grace the soul is immortal and lives, in the state of wickedness the soul will be destroyed in Hell fire. “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and the mortal must put on immortality.” I Cor. 15:52-53 KJV

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man keeps my saying, he shall never see death.” St. John 8:51 read St. John 11:25-26

*At the time of our death our body shall begin to decay and return to the dust of the ground and the spirit that gave us life shall return to God who first gave it. “Then shall the dust return t the earth as it way: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Eccl. 12:7 KJV

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matt.10:28 KJV Upon our death, only the body dies and the soul lives on with God, kept safe until Judgment day.

“The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.” Ps. 22:26 KJV

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” Ps. 23:6

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceased for ever:) That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.” Ps. 49:7-9 KJV

“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.” Dan. 12:2-3

“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal” Matt. 25:46

Two Element of the Human Soul:

The conscious soul is made up of various levels of dimensions the first is the conscious mind and second the subconscious mind. Some theologian believes that a third level called the collective unconscious mind exists. The conscious mind it that part of the thinking process where we reason things out, and it is called the objective mind, because it need evidence and proof before it believes. The subconscious mind is called the subjective mind, it can not differentiate between what is real and what is not and has to rely on the conscious mind to inform it of the truth. A soul is a conscious entity that has an unknown substance we are not aware of that reflects the likeness and image of God.

The subconscious mind records all our feelings and experiences in life, And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” Rev. 20:12. (the book of remembrance in Malachi 3:16) It is also involved in regulating the function of all our organs without us being aware of it.

Your personality and character is the direct result of your inner core image of yourself that is anchored in your subconscious mind. How you think and act is the result of your inner core image. This image of yourself was developed from the time of your birth up to the present time of your life and is the result of years of education, training, feeling and experience along with what you were exposed to from books and magazines, radio and television, family and friends, and co-workers and church members; all rolled up into your core ideas and beliefs. This is what makes you who you are, so the subconscious mind is a very powerful friend.

All creative ideas, thinking and reasoning comes from the conscious mind and it is here where God inspires humans, like the Old Testament prophets and New Testament Apostles to write the things they wrote in our Bible. God places the thoughts into the conscious mind and man says “I got a great idea” and does whatever his thought perceived.

Angelic Beings:

Now angels are messengers of God, beings of light with the ability of conscious thoughts, thinking, reasoning, yet angels to not have a soul and do not have the likeness and image of the Creator, and this is what makes humans special in the eyes of God. Now the Holy Scriptures gives us a lot of information about angels but never tell us that they have souls. In fact this may be the core problem with Satan, not having a soul that reflects God likeness and image, thus causing Satan to rebel against God, by reason of his vanity.  When God commanded all the angels to bow down before Adam, Satan refused to submit himself to a creature he thought inferior to him, in regards to his countenance and brightness of his being.

One of God greatest gift given to us is our ability to conceive, understand and reason things out, to think out all that we experience. Over the millennium of mans history we have always sensed that of an after life, and we have witness things that have been difficult to understand. This intern directs us to a faith that God exists and is real and those things written about God and the mystical things of the faith by his chosen holy men have real validity. Let us review some examples that support to concept of an after life, and the existence of a soul.

*Over the centuries we have people who where close to death return to us and telling us that they had a momentary glimpse of the after life, the experience of always see white light, and that feeling of being pulled out your body, only to be put back into it, etc.

*Research that parapsychologists are doing on the subjects of ghost, entity, apparitions and paranormal studies of after life energy with consciousness etc.

While Biblical passages teach that souls are immortal from the day of their creation, it is important to remember that we are not God, we are not eternal in the same way that God is. God is the only truly eternal being in that He alone is without a beginning or end. God has always existed and will always continue to exist. All living creatures, whether they are human or angelic, are finite in that they had a beginning. While our souls have the ability to live forever once they have come into being, the Bible does not support the concept or teaching that our souls have always preexisted. Our souls are immortal, because that is how God created them, but they did have a beginning; there was a time they did not exist at all.

The clear teaching of the Holy Scriptures is that righteous people will be saved and will exist eternally in heaven, while the wicked people souls will be destroyed in hell “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 1-:28KJV.  The true spiritual life does not cease when our fleshly bodies pass away in death. Our souls will live forever, either in the presence of God in heaven if we are saved, or in eternal death in hell if we reject God’s gift of salvation. In fact, the promise of the Bible is that not only will our souls live forever, but also that our bodies will be resurrected. This hope of a bodily resurrection is at the very heart of the Christian faith 1 Corinthians 15:12-19

Our Purpose in this Life

We were all born into this world with real physical body of flesh and bones and a conscious soul to record it all; to learn and experience pain and suffering, joy and happiness, and good and evil, so as to prepare us for the kingdom of heaven. Our life service a two fold purpose, 1.) as a learning experience for us and 2.) to build trust in God and God to have in us. We find trust in God words and promises and we come to love God as He desires us to love him.

*To be trusted of our love for God through our learning and understanding of good and evil. So we are conditioned and ready for the Kingdom of Heaven.

*To be exposed to the evil of sin so that we may have a reference of evil compared to good.

*To walk through life and being tested by God which results in strengthening our understanding of evil and strengthening our love for God. The prophet Enoch was tested and walked with God 300 years and showed God his great love for him, “and God took him” never seeing or experiencing the taste of death. God will never give us more than what we can handle.

*Those who are called into the service of God, Priesthood or the Deaconate, receive training and education into the divine things and mysteries of God far above those of the general public, so their it is the purpose of the clergy to pass on that knowledge to God’s faithful; to provide wise counseling.

NOTE: All human being life is precious, a gift from God, holding within each of us the Spirit, the likeness and image of God, thereby, all human life  supersedes all religions on earth. No human being should be put to death on the so bases of his or her religion, like Hitler did during world war II. If you where Jewish you where put to death, no questions ask.
